VISUALIZING PATIENT WAITING TIME

During a week of Data Visualization class, I chose to compare the data on waiting time for patients in two states of the country: Dist. of Columbia with the highest average wait time and Wyoming with the least average wait time. For these two states, I would compare the break down of waiting time until the patients got admitted and the total time versus the type of the hospital to study if there is a relationship between the type of hospital and the total waiting time.

THE CHALLENGE:

HOW CAN I VISUALIZE THE ER WAITING TIMES FOR PATIENTS IN DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND WYOMING IN A CREATIVE AND ENGAGING WAY?

Since there were four variables involved in this dataset, I chose to represent this data through an interactive pdf created on Adobe Indesign. This medium allows the viewer to filter, by clicking on specific tabs, to view the data that he/she is interested in.

I transferred the data to Excel to clean it and explore different visual directions.

After making critical decisions about which variables I would represent through the visualization, I sketched out visual explorations and calculated the required data.

Choosing colors that are relevant to the data and the user is a key element. I chose cool are calming colors that are widely associated with healthcare.

I chose Adobe Indesign to create the interactive pdf since it allows the user to be precise by using guides & grids
