#WHYDSI is a board game designed by Laura Kaudmas, Rhea Rakshit, Juno Lee and I for our Games for Impact class. We were given three restrictions by our faculty Asi Burak which framed our challenge:
hOW DO WE DESIGN A GAME THAT: USES ONLY BLACK OR WHITE COLORS, INCLUDES A FAMOUS QUOTE FROM A BOOK/MOVIE AND IS BASED ON STRATEGY WITH LIMITED LUCK/CHANCE
We designed #WHYDSI for students in our cohort at Design for Social Innovation at School of Visual Arts. The board displayed the layout of our floor.
The game is designed to be played in 2-4 teams with an aim to visit each room on the board to collect 'skill cards'. You can collect these cards by answering questions on the card of your choice once you are in the room. The first team to do this and reach the exit to 'graduate' wins.
The instructions laid out the rules and the definition of various components of the game such as, the cards, opportunity, obstacles and shortcuts.
The Attendance Card: This card helps to keep a check on which room have you been to or want to go to
The skill cards were divided into three categories: Easy, Medium and Hard depending on the difficulty of questions. The questions were based on our coursework and people in our class. The more difficult the question, the more steps you get to move ahead on the board. Only when you answer these questions correctly will you be allowed to move ahead. This is how we eliminated the use of a dice and therefore, luck/chance in the game.
The skill cards could be used for the 'good' by helping the other team or to hurt them. For this reason, we used the quote 'With great power, comes great responsibility'
